Gingrich

Brushfire of Freedom

The Irritable Pundit

Hi all,

So, a week later and where are we? OWS and Oakland melt down, the economy drones anemically onwards, Cain shrugs off Anita Hill "part deux",and Gingrich rises slowly among the rack of candidates.

OK. That last one took me completely by surprise.

The media has made Gingrich their boogy-man for 20 years after all. He was supposed to be a side-show at best (as was Cain). I mean, who can forget this gem of a Newsweek cover?

I mean COME ON. Look! He's trying to steal Christmas for heavens sake!

(hint: This was during his fight as Speaker of the House, for Welfare Reform)

There is no way Gingrich was supposed to get into double-digit territory. He is divorced, so obviously NO ONE can forgive him for that, right?  Meanwhile, Gingrich AND his silly first name (Newt? really?) have been slimed by completely fabricated stories of divorce documents given to a wife dying of cancer (much to the surprise of his very-alive-ex and his daughter), he has been accused of a supposed lack of fiscal accountability because he bought something expensive for his current wife (belied by the Contract With America) and of course there is the unforgivable crime of having a very large head with a bad haircut.

Yeah, ok. He's guilty on the head/haircut thing.

So how has Gingrich moved up in the polls?

One reason.

Hmmm... looks like the primaries are going to be interesting after all.

See you next week!

Thanks, I was trying to remember if it was Newsweek or Time that ran that headline.  I was just telling my wife how they demonized Gingrich even before he took over in 1995!  This was yet another coffin in the nail of me ever voting Democrat again or trusting the media on anything political.
