Pardoning Dick Cheney

One of the most interesting things about discussing politics with Liberals is seeing how their memory works when it comes to Republicans of the past, or any part of the past for that matter.  Not only are they usually horribly misguided or misinformed, they are also very selective and increasingly vindictive.  It's as if they can not discuss any subject of public policy without referencing, often incorrectly, events of the past.  It is sad evidence of the failure of both our institutions of "higher" education as well as the supposedly free press.

Let's take for example a discussion on the recent dictatorial actions by our "President". He has, in full view of the media and with the blessings of his party, absconded with the power granted the people and modified legislation.  On his own.  Like a King might do, were he solidifying his power.  Obama modified the "No Child Left Behind" act, written by none other than the vaunted Ted Kennedy, in an effort to prevent another large percentage of US public schools from being labeled "unfit". If more schools are considered unfit, fewer teachers will be able to get work, which means a reduced number of teachers who can pay union dues, fewer dollars in the coffers of the NEA, and less money for his coming campaign.

Ok, that last part was admittedly a bit cynical and significantly off target.  If you bring up this subject with a Liberal you will not hear any rationalization of Obama's actions regarding the need to keep teachers employed.  They won't talk about the children or how this step was needed to ensure the stability of our education system.  They will simply say, "Bush did it, too!"

They will usually, incorrectly, site Bush's "unilateral" move into Afghanistan and Iraq.  Now, let's ignore for a moment that the constitution give the President the power to make war.  He is, after all, the Commander-in-Chief of our military.  That's one of the reasons his personal transportation while on office is called "Air Force One" and "Marine One". He is the single highest ranking person in the military, the guy in charge of making war and enforcing peace.  Let's also ignore that the Constitution does not give him the job of "Educator-in-Chief". The fact is, the myth of Bush's unilateral action in Afghanistan and Iraq is just that, a myth.

Liberals seem to conveniently forget the resolutions passed by both houses of Congress in the aftermath of the 9-11 attacks.  At that particular point in time even the most America-hating Democrats were nearly forced to vote in favor of the President taking military action to prevent further attacks on US soil or America citizens abroad.  Those same policies, the policies created by those resolutions by the way, have been extended by Obama and used successfully to eliminate key terrorist leaders, including a US citizen.

But even if Bush did act unilaterally.  Even if the Constitution did not make the President the CIC and give him the authority to make war.  Even if all the statements that liberals make, based in faulty recollections and improper citations, were in fact true, there's still one significant flaw in their logic.  In most cases, when liberals say "Bush did it, too" they are saying so in defense of Obama's policies, or some other liberal policy or action.  It's the argument all of us learned as little children, "He did it, too!". Yes, it's unquestionably childish, but that is to be expected in dealing with liberals.  But again, let's take the logic forward to its inevitable conclusion.

If the actions of a predecessor, right or wrong, are justification for all future actions, right or wrong, then doesn't it follow that no action is any longer "wrong"?  Theft, been done before, should now be legal.  Ponzi schemes were not invented by Bernie Madoff, so we need to let him out of jail.  Tax evasion can no longer be prosecuted by the IRS, because someone else has already done it, so it must be ok now.  Murder, and its cousin assassination, were crimes when originally committed and documented, but now must be considered acceptable actions based on the "Bush Defense" so frequently presented by liberals.  Why there's little if anything that could or should be considered inappropriate or criminal, at least if this line of logic is fully applied.

You would even have to pardon Dick Cheney, which is not really necessary, but it would just be fun to watch.
