Cutting Into the Cuts

Brushfire of Freedom

The screams you hear are liberals watching their precious entitlement programs die a horrid death.  Or at least that’s what they would have you believe.  Republicans will throw granny in the street, deny women health care (read “abortions”), starve the children, kill the minorities, abuse the illegal immigrants, and make your pet poodle wear plaid.

Oh the humanity.

The liberals, and their lapdogs in the state-run media, need to get a grip on reality.  And your good friend Ram is here to help.  Oh I know it may not look like help, but trust me it is.  You see, all that stress, all that high tension you are creating is not only bad for you, it’s just not necessary.  You could give yourself a hernia with all that griping and groaning your doing.  You’ll pop a blood vessel, get a migraine, or maybe even give yourself a heart attack.  Stress is bad for you, at least according to the latest CNN / MSNBC / Berkley / Moscow poll, so you may want to ease up a bit on the panic and hysteria.  Not to mention that crap is really starting to piss us all off.

The first thing you need to know is the cuts really aren’t all that deep.  When we talk billions of dollars out of trillions in spending, we’re talking peanuts to Mercury.  That’s basically comparing a bean to a planet in our solar system, for those who went to Berkley.  A billion dollars has three less zeros and a trillion.  Another way to look at it is a billion dollars is 0.1% of a trillion.  There is a greater percentage of Americans without healthcare today, yes even after Obamacare, so the spending “cuts” are really insubstantial.

Secondly, they really aren’t cuts so much as a freeze.  The “cuts” really did nothing more than hold spending at previous levels, trimming the planned spending growth for the remainder of the year.  This will save us some money, but if the funds are properly managed it should have little impact on many of the programs.  If program managers can drive out just a small percentage of the waste in their programs, there should be little impact on these entitlements.

But what about the cuts planned for 2012?  Those cuts that will make the rich richer, kill poor people, dirty the water and air, and make old people eat dog food.  Yeah, those cuts.  Medicare will be destroyed.  Head Start will be eliminated.  It’s really horrid what the evil Republicans are doing.

So if it’s really that bad.  If what the GOP has planned will be so harmful to VOTING Americans in an election season, why not let them do it?  It would pretty much assure that Dems would storm back into the majority in 2012.  It would seal Obama’s re-election bid.  If everything that the GOP has presented will be so destructive, why won’t liberals just let them do it and clean up the mess after Dems take back control in 2013?

Simple, it ain’t that bad.  It’s not that bad because it’s not really cuts, it’s spending reductions.  It’s called baseline budgeting and it is the dirty little secret in Washington.  To explain, if you spent $100.00 this year and you budgeted for $200.00 next year, you set your spending baseline at $200.00 for 2012.  Now, if I tell you you’ll only get $150.00, you could say you’re spending 50% more this coming year than you did last.  That would be an accurate statement.  You might also say that I cut your budget by 50% for 2012.  This too would be accurate.  What Dems would say is that I cut your 2012 spending by 50%, which is a twisted version of both truths designed to create the panic.  This is why the cuts that the GOP has planned are not really cuts.

There are some real cuts in the Republican plan.  There must be.  We’re broke, we must stop spending.  But if you think of the logic provided above, and add the fact that killing Americans would leave no one for the GOP to rule, then you can see that the wailing and groaning on the left is ridiculous.

There are no tax cuts for the rich.  There is no planned destruction of the education system.  There is no elimination of programs for the needy, the poor, minorities, women, or children.  The majority of the cuts are reductions in planned spending increases.  They are efforts to stem the tsunami of spending that has been the hallmark of the Obama regime.  It must be done, for the sake of our precious children!
