Brain Twisters

 Brushfire of Freedom

Ram Rants

Most of us have had the pleasure (or displeasure) of reading or learning some type of tongue twister.  These short statements, laced with rhymes and alliteration, are often used to help young students master proper pronunciation or challenge them to improve their speaking skills.  “She sells sea shells down by the sea shore” seems silly since the beach is covered with free shells, but logic was never the strong suit of the tongue twister.

Like the tongue twister, logic has never been the strong suit of liberals or liberal ideas.  When you take more than a cursory look at any liberal idea, you can see the logical challenges.  This deeper look into liberal logic creates what I like to call a “brain twister”.  However, unlike the tongue twister, the brain twister can cause actual physical pain.  Let me provide some examples.

The elimination of a tax cut is not a tax increase.

The reduction of a spending increase is a spending cut.

This one comes courtesy of one of my favorite twisted brains, Nancy Pelosi.  Let’s twist our way through, shall we?  A tax cut is a reduction in the amount of taxes paid.  A tax increase means we pay more taxes.  A spending increase means you spend more money, a spending cut means you spend less money.  So, basic logic indicates that increases mean more money changes hands and a cut indicates less money changes hands.  Now let’s twist it, liberal style.  Nancy says that letting the Bush tax cuts expire is not a tax increase, even though you will pay more in taxes, meaning an increase in money changing hands is not really an increase because it is an end to a decrease.

Ouch.

But wait, there’s more.  If a spending increase for education of, let’s say 10%, is reduced to 9%, it’s a cut in education spending even though 9% more money is changing hands.  This is how an increase in education spending becomes a budget cut.   So in the world of liberal budgets, increases in taxes are not tax increases because they are the end of existing tax cuts, and increases in spending are not increases because we reduced the amount of the increase.

Double ouch.

This type of Orwellian double-speak is common in brain twisters.  Nancy uses this type of logic to declare her partisan health care bill to be bipartisan because bipartisanship does not require a bipartisan vote.  Correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t bipartisanship require, well, bipartisanship?

Try to breathe slowly, it helps.

If you have untwisted your brain from that last little adventure, take a look at this next one.

Increases in local temperatures are an indication of global warming.

Decreases in local temperatures are an indication of global warming.

Corollary: Even though the globe has stopped warming as part of its natural cycle, the recent global warming trend is not a climatic cycle but a real global threat.

For the entire first decade of this millennium we heard how things were getting hotter everywhere and that this was a sure sign of global warming.  Then things started cooling off, new record lows were set, new record snow falls covered large parts of the country and the globe, and we were told that this was a sign of global warming.  We’ve even had “scientists” tell us that the natural cycle of warming and cooling is a sign of global warming.  In other words, no matter what happens around the globe, the globe is warming.  So warming is warming and cooling is warming.  Hot is hot and cold is hot.

To avoid sounding too stupid (too late), liberals began calling global warming “global climate change”.  For those who went to Berkley, climate is defined as, “ the statistics of temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind, rainfall, atmospheric particle count and numerous other meteorological elements in a given region over long periods of time.”  In other words, climate changes because by definition the climate is change.

But I thought change was good.  Don’t we need change?  Didn’t we vote for hope and change?

Ow, ow, ow...

Ok, so don’t twist a brain twister, that would be rule one I think.

It is not difficult to take any liberal position and identify the internal brain twister.  The Arizona law that makes it illegal to be in the country illegally is in fact illegal, or at least unethical, even though we are a nation of laws.

Don’t read that one more than once.

The best way to get out of debt is to spend more money that we don’t have.  Spending decreases debt even though we must increase the debt limit to continue spending (done twice so far by the Obama regime).

Damn that hurts.

We can increase the number of people on government health care and decrease the overall cost of health care without limiting access to health care.

Whoa.

Ok, so I’ll stop there, largely because I am now seeing double and need to finish writing this little blog so I can go get something for this massive headache.  The brain twisters should show one thing.  Any liberal argument, any position or policy, when examined with a normal, rational mind will not stand up to any test.  This is why liberals attack conservatives, because they know they can not attack conservative ideas.  Even Obama has used disgusting slurs in an attempt to discredit his opponents.  He knows that, once examined, his policies and ideas will not survive any level of real scrutiny.

Liberal policies can not stand the test of time.  They have failed each time they have been tried, just ask a Greek.  The real danger in any liberal argument is that, on the surface, they sound good and make a person feel good.  But, once examined even one layer deeper, they become brain twisters, and a twisted brain is a brain in pain.  Which falls mainly on the plain.

Ouch.

This philosophy isn't new. As anyone who ran track in higher school or college will attest, track athletes typically commence by working quarter mile or 800 after which it move up in range right after they’ve trained their bodies to operate quickly. No coach worth his salt would let an athlete jump correct into the 5,000 or 10,000 without first having him race the 800 or mile. So why do so numerous recreational runners do just that?

Very cool fountain and nice design. I like the light at the top. So many people who owns fountains doesn’t light up their fountain during nights which I think is a huge loss considering the beauty of it.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Between me and my husband we've owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
