Sarah who?

The Irritable Pundit

There is a crisis. It is real and it is here now.

We hear about it on TV. The White House press secretary has made it clear. ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC and CNN send their talking heads to various roundtables to discuss it in somber tones every day. The keepers of modern American culture agree with the News divisions. From the comedy bastions of Saturday Night Live to Family Guy, from the The View to Late Night, endless hours of programming are devoted to the issue. It is deafening, cacophonous, raucous and unending.

We read about it over coffee. Frank Rich and the New York Times join their lesser printed brethren in devoting literally thousands of words to the issue with each day's delivery. One article after another in a steady succession. There is more ink on the subject than in the collected works of Leo Tolstoy.

The web is no escape from the drumbeat. The Huffington Post hammers it relentlessly, the Daily KOS continually pours out its outrage. David Brooks is offended. Maureen Dowd is outraged. Kathleen Parker is disgusted. Politico is aghast. Andrew Sullivan is positively apocalyptic. Even Fark.com has at least one thread going on about it at any moment (between photoshopped images of squirrels).

What is this horrid thing they are all worked up about?

"Sarah Palin is not important or relevant."

Yup, thats it. There is apparently a consensus on the matter. She is just not important.  Not relevant.  She has no impact at all.

Message received.

Seriously.

We hear you O' Wizards of Smart! Sarah Palin is nothing, nothing at all!

We get it.

Really.

But... if that is the case, could you please explain why are you talking about her so much? Why the strident declarations about her every single night? Why do you insist on telling us how completely irrelevant she is 24/7?

Is it the cash in her PAC?

Is it the monster selling book?

Is it the long lines of fans outside every signing?

Is it the crowds that show up wherever she speaks?

Is it the support that dwarfs anything any left-leaning personality (Obama included) can draw today?

Is it the deceptively simple Facebook posts that seem to be able to blithely derail the machinations of the Democrats?

What is it specifically that makes you repeat "Sarah Palin is nobody!" ad nauseam?

Is it... fear?
