Brushfire of Freedom
The Conservative Cowboy
I know that everyone is probably done hearing about the special election in Massachusetts that happened this week, but I want to use those results to point out a few things that the rest of the country should take from this election.
First big point is that the people of this country on the right are not the only people that do not want the health care reform that was passed in the house and senate. The people that are in the middle of the spectrum, moderate democrats and independents also do not agree with the current bill.
Second is the fact that the people in the state of Massachusetts already have a law on the book that requires health care coverage, as well as many of the same policies that are in the current bill. I find it very telling that the people of the state that is already using some of the policies in the proposed legislation in congress voted for a senator to block the federal bill. I think that shows that the people of Massachusetts are having some buyer’s remorse about passing state legislation on health care.
Third which is an interesting bit of facts that we will probably not hear about on CNN or MSNBC, and that is that the people that are in Rep Barney Frank’s district in Massachusetts voted close to 60% for Brown in Tuesday’s election. Maybe this will tell Barney that he needs to change some of his voting practices to get re-elected in the coming election.
So with all of these interesting facts what can we really learn from what has transpired this past Tuesday? We can learn that things in the congress need to change if anyone up for re-election in November wants to continue working in Washington. We also can learn the Obama better start following his word about bipartisan politics because the independents and the moderates are getting sick of partisan bills.
I hope that we all can take one major thing from this election that has been plaguing our political system for almost a century, that parties should not be the forefront of politics. The forefront of a representative Democracy needs to be the issues, and there needs to be some accountability back to the people, not back to the special interests that fill campaign coffers.
Overall I am very proud of the people of Massachusetts for utilizing their voice and hopefully sending a message to Washington that there will be not more politics as usual, and that no seat in the house or senate is guaranteed.
We need to all remember this day when we go out and vote in November, we cannot be swayed by smooth talking politicians and “pretty” TV ads. We need to vote as educated individuals and base our selection on merit not along party lines.
