Price of Success

 Brushfire of Freedom

Ram Rants

This week the Senate, under the esteemed Harry Reid, tries to pass legislation that will give the federal government control over 1/6 of the US economy.  When combined with the other pieces they already control, the government is about to take control of a large part of our lives.  Can't you just feel the excitement?

So, what is the price of the Obama success?  That is what this is all about.  Health care is the "key agenda item" for the Obama presidency.  It is critical that he have success, so he'll have something to talk about in the coming State of the Union address.  After all, he can't be caught delivering the truth about the state of the union in the State of the Union address, can he?  So, what will it cost us, the people, to give Barry this little feather in his princely cap?

Well, there's the monitory cost.  The most conservative estimates put the cost of the recent Senate monstrosity at around $800 billion, but that's before all of the changes made since its arrival on the Senate floor.  Several non-partisan groups have estimated the costs at closer to $2.2 trillion, roughly three times the conservative estimate.  Based on the past performance of other such government program, you can expect that $2.2 trillion to become $4 trillion or more.  We will see this cost in the skyrocketing national debt (the cap was recently raised to account for this expenditure), increased taxes, and increasing medical costs.  These are all facts, and all discussed by various members of Congress (especially the tax increases).  They're coming up with ways to hide these costs, but we will see them.  Keep in mind, our "representatives" will not see these costs, they will not be required to subscribe to these plans.

There's the loss of innovation in the medical industry.  This is a cost not only to America, but to the world as a whole.  Many of the advances in medicine over the past 50 years or more has come from the United States.  Our free market environment is a huge breeding ground for many types of innovations, all motivated by the opportunity to not only benefit mankind in general, but also benefit themselves specifically.  The potential for substantial monetary gain is the driving force behind much of today's technology, in medicine and other areas.  New cures for new diseases, new methods of treatment, new drugs to help improve our lives, all possible because creative minds free to invent, take risks, and reap rewards have created products and services that have saved lives around the world.  These are real "saves", not the "saves" as in "jobs" that Obama creates.  There are thousands of people that come to this country every year to take advantage of those innovations.  They owe their lives to our free market medical system.  You know, the one that Barry, Harry, and Nancy claim is failing.

And we will see the end to this system when Barry signs his little bill and gets his little feather.  No amount of disagreement form the Libs will change that fact.  We will increase the cost of health care, reduce the options, eliminate competition, and reduce the number of people covered.  These are all costs of the Obamacare plan.  This is one of the other costs.  We will lose one of the best health care systems in the world.  The new "government option" has a huge advantage in that it does not have to show a profit.  So, as a consumer, you can continue to pay for your current health care plan, or you can shift to the cheaper government option.  You will of course choose the later.  The free market companies will see a loss of their customers, and will not be able to lower prices to match the government option because they are still required to make a profit.  So they will be forced to close their doors, becoming one more tomb stone on the path to Socialism.  When all the free market companies are gone, we will have no choice but to use the government option.  That's the "taxpayer funded" option.  Keep that last phrases in mind, because it is important.

If you don't believe this will happen, please take a peek at Hawaii.  They had a government plan, and everyone left their more expensive private plans and switched to the government option.  So many in fact that the government was left with two option; stop providing health care all together, or significantly limit the amount of coverage.  They chose the former, but Barry won't have that option.  Also, keep in mind that Barry is on record in favor of a phased approach to socialized medicine.  You can see how it will work.

Now let's talk about the last, and possibly greatest cost.  It has to do with that little phrase "taxpayer funded".  Once government health care becomes THE health care for America, there will be many changes made to our lives in the name of the "taxpayer".  Our diets will be regulated, because it is necessary that you remain healthy in order to reduce the burden on the "taxpayer" health care system.  Our health care treatments will be limited, and filtered through the potential impact on the "taxpayer".  Eventually, we will become too great a risk for the "taxpayer" and our health care will be eliminated.  The type of car we drive, where we eat, when we eat, how much we drink (alcohol included), and what drugs we take will all be managed to prevent an overload on the taxpayer.

You need look no further than the Pay Czar to see how much influence the government will have in health care.  We see these steps taken already in New York, where specific foods have been outlawed in the interest of the public health.  These practices will become national, all to protect the "taxpayer".  Obama already manages two of the "big three" US automakers.  Unions control the workers at the third.  You will be told what to drive to ensure you are safe, secure, and protected.  Sounds good, until you realize that someone is telling you what to do, how to live, as if you were a small child.  You will lose your freedom, the greatest gift given by our Founders, all in the name of protecting you, the taxpayer.  Freedom once lost is difficult to recover.  This is the greatest price of all, and we, and our children, and our grandchildren all will pay.

Between me and my husband we've owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
