Let’s establish a premise for a moment that the amount of knowledge you have about the facts regarding today’s hottest topics is inversely proportional to the amount of time you spend consuming information from “traditional” media outlets. In other words, the more time you spend watching Katie and Anderson, the less you actually know about what is going on in the world today. If we assume for a moment that this premise is correct, then we can measure your “Topical IQ” as a calculation:
TIQ = 1/Mc
Where “TIQ” is of course topical IQ or your knowledge of current events, and Mc is “Media Consumption” or the amount of time you spend watching “The View” and CNN (the same thing, really). We can then establish a simple quiz whereby an individual’s knowledge of topics AND media consumption levels are measured simultaneously. This sounds like a round-about way of judging an individual’s knowledge base, but let’s just see how it works.
Question 1: Unemployment is at record levels, the national deficit has skyrocketed in the past six months, and the nation’s economy has been in “negative growth” for the past two quarters. This means:
A - The stimulus is working B - The economy is recovering
C - It’s all Bush’s fault D - All of the above
E - None of the above
Question 2: Global warming is:
A - Settled scientific consensus B - The doom of us all
C - Bush’s fault D - All of the above
E - None of the above
Question 3: The collapse of the housing market has been associated with the failure of government-run Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac. To prevent further damage, we should:
A - Let Chris Dodd fix it B - Let Barney Frank fix it
C - Bush broke it, make him fix it D - All of the above
E - None of the above
Question 4: Socialized medicine is:
A - Key to stopping the B - Working everywhere it has been tried
health care crisis
C - Bush’s fault if it fails D - All of the above
E - None of the above
Question 5: The Pelosi House has passed two major spending bills and health care legislation without reading the documents, much less posting on the web for five days per the Obama promise. This is an example of:
A - Transparent government B - CIA manipulation of Congress
C - Bush’s manipulation of D - All of the above
Congress
E - None of the above
Now let’s do a little scoring.
Give yourself 5 Media Consumption points for each question where you answered A or B. You have an eye on the state-run media, and you are familiar with many of their talking points, but you have not been fully indoctrinated into the truly looney left. There may be hope for you if you can find other sources of info other than liberal propaganda channels.
Give yourself 10 media points for each question where you answered C or D. Let’s face it, you have consumed all of the fruit punch, taken a big bite of the apple, swallowed the whole enchilada, and have the wool so far over your eyes when you sneeze it tickles your toes. You are the leftest of the left, an Alinsky advocate, a Marx marionette, and a Lenin lover. If you answered C to a question, you are also a Pelosi partisan.
Give yourself 0.1 points for each question where you selected E as the answer. You do not spend much time with the state-run media jabber. You’ve been wise enough to research the facts through other sources. You ignore the opinions and commentary of traditional media and search for the raw data, making decisions on your own. You are an individual, a free thinker, and an advocate for truth. The result is an extensive knowledge of the events that shape our world, and knowledge of how the world might look tomorrow.
Now to tally. Simply total your scores for each question, then multiple the results by two. As an example, if you answered E for all five questions, your total would be 0.5, multiplied by 2 would result in a Media Consumption total of 1. Now, inserting this into the primary calculation and you will see that 1/1 = 1. Expressed as a percentage, you have a 100% knowledge of the topics surveyed. If however you selected C for all five questions, well...
