Shovel Ready Projects…Or Not!

As our respective states use all of this stimulus money on our shovel ready projects we can see the corruption that will always follow any Government run program.   This whole program has turned our states into competing entities, all trying to get as much of the pie as possible.  The first example I have to illustrate this activity is a project going on in my own state of Colorado.  The project is taking place in Breckenridge, CO where there is still un-melted snow on the ground.  C-DOT is in a hurry to get the material to the job site so they can show the Federal Government that they are spending the stimulus money that was awarded.  That material will be sitting in a yard for at least a month before construction can even start.

Where does this stem from you may be wondering?  Well there is a simple fact that the Government has no vested interest in any of these projects.  They don’t care if the project is done correctly or even if it is done with the cheapest materials.  The only thing that the federal Government cares about in these situations is if the project is below a budget that is set by and engineering firm; an engineering firm that is trying to make as much money off the project as possible.  I think that we can see where this is going.  So what is the alternative?

Well that answer is simple, when a project is put into the hands of the end user, a private business, then there is a vested interest to use products that will be efficient.  The private entity is the company that will have to use and maintain the infrastructure that is going into the ground and thus they are more apt to get the engineering firms to provide a budget and bill of materials that will serve the end users needs.

This is another example why the business sector needs to be left in the hands of private companies; companies with the knowledge and the expertise to do the job correctly the first time.  The Government cannot ensure accountability for these things because the resources needed to make these companies accountable is unrealistic at best.  The accountability comes from private business investing their own money in those projects.

This holds true for all of the other government sponsored programs like welfare.  Welfare is set up to help people that cannot provide for themselves or their families.  Not a bad idea, however, there is no accountability for those people, no motivation to help themselves get out of a bad situation.  Overall most human beings are basically lazy.  I say this because productivity in any business will increase when there is incentive pay, a reason to perform above and beyond your job duties.  If that incentive pay is gone then humans will do as little work as possible just to get by.

I think that everyone can see where this whole thing is going; when you have a socialized economy there is no incentive to go above and beyond any of your job duties.  There is no incentive for the company to produce a better product.  There is no incentive for a contractor to install infrastructure that will be maintenance free.  This shovel ready stimulus is just another example of how Government controls breed corruption.  A corruption that is evident in this country, and very evident in this current administration.  Government accountability will come when the Government stops growing and focuses their efforts on the only job a government should do, and that is to protect the sovereignty of this Nation.
