The government today is sending a message to the people of this great Nation with the way they are handling our current economic crisis. The message is clear; sacrifice now and we will provide a better situation for future generations. The problem with this ideology is that Americans look to improve their situation now, and use that as a means to provide opportunities to their children. This mentality must be maintained in order to get the country out of this slump. We have to look at fixing the current situation and then we can look to the future. We need to look at short term and long term goals when developing an economic plan. The current budget in question is full of ideas with timeframes that extend out 15 plus years. I don’t see anything that will help turn around the situation in the short term.
The plans that are in the works right now are full of programs, like the tax increases to fund Medicare that are part of the Democratic agenda. Obama’s first budget is setting records for the high spending and going to increase the national debt by the end of his first term. This budget is a way to look at what Obama plans to do while he is on office. He wants to penalize the successful and reward the individual that cannot provide for himself. Sounds quite a bit like Socialism to me, and that is a grim future for this country. Obama is using optimistic numbers to foreshadow how fast the economy will turn around, that are unrealistic according to many economic scholars. His excuse is that he inherited these deficits from the previous administration. Yes there was a $2.9 trillion deficit during the Bush administration. Keep in mind that we were fighting two wars and having to deal with huge national disasters like Katrina and 9-11. The problem that arises is based on all of the liberal promises made on the campaign trail. There is no way to provide the American people with cheap health care, lower energy costs, and tax cuts. If the government increases funding for health care taxes must go up somewhere to pay for that increase. If the government pushes alternative energy sources that are more expensive than traditional energy sources, taxes have to increase. These tax increases will affect every American, not just the ones making over $250,000 a year like promised. An increase in the tax that companies pay for carbon emissions will increase the cost of energy for everyone. The increase on the government tax for gasoline will affect everyone.
The current situation in the US government is one where the interests of politicians and lobbyists outweigh the interests of the majority of Americans. A Representative Democracy is founded on the belief that the people will elect officials with their best interests in mind. I think that we as Americans have a duty to stand up when those politicians put their interests in front of ours! We have an opportunity to make our voices heard in the upcoming election of 2010. We need to look beyond the campaign smokescreens and mainstream media to realize what these people will actually do while in office. We must also look at the ramifications of the promises that are given, and make an educated voting decision. We the people have the power to elect officials that will follow through and not make empty promises. We have the chance to learn for the mistakes of the past couple of elections and start down the path to correct those mistakes in 2010. We cannot forget the past and the very principles that make this country so great. Once again we as a Nation need to make our voices heard and educate ourselves on what course of action is best for our Nation.
