The Irritable Pundit

I can not possibly tell you how much I loathe, abhor and in all ways possible dislike Lindsey Graham and the rest of the RINO squishies, such as McCain, Snowe, and even Romney (yeah, I went there).  They have told us, over and over, that we can't fight the Democrats. We have to give in, compromise and just accept what we can get. They say we can't fight health care reform, so just offer our version of the same.  We can't fight global warming legislation, so let's come up with our own. We can't, we can't we can't... it gets old listening to this nonsense.

They are not Republicans, they are Republican'ts.  And I am sick of them all.

The problem is, those get-along/go-along ideas went out of vogue in the 70's & 80's. No one today wants "Democrat light" ideas.  These are polyester suited, wide lapel, spinning glitterball thoughts.  They are the definition of passé, but the get-along crowd is back again and wants a great big tent full of their old losing ideas.  Well, big or small, that tent is reeking with noxious smoke machines and Bee Gees B-sides sung just enough out of key to make my dog howl in pain.

Is anyone paying attention to the political landscape? Outside, the leaves fall like Congressional satisfaction polls onto the frost-covered ground of our frozen economy. We are seeing first hand how poorly liberal ideas actually work, so why are we trying to duplicate them?  Didn't we just lost the last round playing this get-along game with John McCain, even though he was loved by all the best people (the media)? In spite of his epic fail, we are supposed to trust them anyway and do it all over again. We should just put on our platform boots and again follow the "disco-wizards of smart" into their canvas-covered 80's party. Ladies and gentlemen, this is "The Winter of our Disco Tent" (sorry, couldn't help it.)

No.

I refuse. I will not go along. I will not vote for a RINO. I will not pretend Disco Duck is a good song or that any man looks good dancing in roller skates (shudder). I will never again listen to John McCain sing KC and the Sunshine band's "I'm Your Boogie Man".  Though I admit that I wouldn't mind seeing Meghan McCain (Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake her Booty. Did you see her Facebook pictures?  (check out the Oct 19 post at http://jimtreacher.com ) Get down tonight! Seriously! Keep It Comin' Love! That's the Way (Uh huh uh huh) I Like It!  Wait what?  I was just kidding! Hang on Megs! Please Don't Go!  (10 points for anyone old enough to count the number of of KC song references, bonus 5 points if you can sing the hook for each of them.)

Seriously folks, how many times do we have to lose to this soundtrack?  Disco is dead, Rock killed it forever!

We went down this lame path before, back in the 70's & 80's, and got nowhere until Reagan brought Heavy Metal into the picture and made those guys run to the hills (greatest Iron Maiden song of all time).  Can you remember the mayhem?  Can you remember the blue-blood Republicans of that era reacting to Reagan even more negatively than the left?  Sound familiar?  It certainly does to me. Such things are oddly cyclical folks.

Now, as then, all it ever takes is one serious hard rock song coming over the radio to shake things up.  People recognize the truth in a good conservative ideal, just as people just instinctively recognize the truth of a good rock riff. Who can deny the power of the opening bars where the song is promising to absolutely ROCK YOUR SOCKS OFF?  Come on people, you would love to feel that again! Now wouldn't you?

The PURSUIT of Happiness

by Ramarious 19. June 2009 05:00

 Brushfire of Freedom

Voice of Adams

Our founding documents guarantee the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  It is important to note the word “pursuit” in this guarantee.  It does not promise happiness, but only an unending opportunity to achieve happiness.  There is a significant difference, and one that tends to draw the line between Conservative and Liberal.  Our Founders knew the difference when they crafted the documents that are the bedrock of this nation, and they purposely chose a pursuit over a guarantee that the government would provide happiness.

The primary reason for their decision is because they knew a government could not deliver on such a spectacular promise.  The government they were leaving behind was a monarchy whose ruler was responsible for all he surveyed.  That responsibility is bigger than one man, so he placed barons and dukes in various locations throughout his empire, each responsible for their domains.  Even with this vast array of support, the government could not provide happiness to all its subjects.  That’s why many left the empire and came to America.

We can see the impact of government trying to provide happiness in places like the former USSR.  The government was providing everything to everyone in this “worker’s paradise” in an effort to ensure the happiness of the masses.  The result was misery, long lines for basic essentials, and the eventual collapse of the government, partly due to its own massive weight and partly because President Ronald Reagan accelerated its demise.  It is also visible today in the Communist havens of Cuba, where Fidel protects the people with his mighty hands, fending off hurricanes, and North Korea, where their glorious leader has perpetuated their poverty while promising prosperity.  Alliteration aside, North Koreans are some of the most miserable people on the planet, while their government continues to promise them happiness.

The definition of happiness is another issue that prevents its guarantee.  Some see happiness as a quiet place in the hills with no work, no troubles, and no interruptions.  Others want an exciting life style, with constant parties, friends all around, music, dancing, etc.  “To Each His (or Her) Own” is probably the best way to define happiness, though in a group of people as large as the US population, it is highly unlikely that you will be able to define happiness in such a way that everyone would be happy.  Thus a guarantee of happiness is a recipe for failure.  Our Founders understood this as well and inserted the word “pursuit” in the sentence to prevent people from thinking that their government was the source of their happiness.

The issue we have now is that our current President and his Liberal friends want to promise happiness.  They want to deliver the impossible to the masses.  To do so, they are defining happiness their way, which means there will be some part of the population that will not be happy.  Some people will be thrilled with the idea of government health care, while others will not like the idea of having someone else select their doctor.  Some will enjoy the new, efficient, “green” government car provided with government subsidy, while others will be afraid to drive these tiny “go carts with air bags”.  This is the major danger in the effort to guarantee happiness.  There are too many definitions, it is a completely subjective concept.  We are all individuals, and as such we have our own definition of happiness.  It is foley to assume that any government can fully meet the needs of an entire nation.

So our Founders inserted “pursuit” meaning, “...quest for, searching for, aim, goal, objective, dream...”.  By its very definition, the pursuit of happiness is a guarantee of the American Dream.  It allows the individual to define happiness for themselves (a nice glass of single-malt and a fine cigar), and then use all legal means to obtain that goal.  It is a more effective guarantee for the government because the government’s role in the matter is not to define happiness, and not to provide happiness.  It is to step aside and let those who define their own happiness pursue, achieve, and exceed their goals.  It is this concept of the pursuit of happiness that makes this country great.  When each American is allowed to set their own goals and pursue them, without government hinderance, this nation prospers as it did in the 80’s.  It expands and creates new technologies as it did in the 90’s.  It becomes a world leader, a lone super-power, as it did at the dawn of the new millennium.

This is where we see the line between Conservatives and Liberals.  When a Conservative speaks of happiness, he speaks of the opportunity to define your own happiness, set the goals you choose, and pursue those goals unfettered by the shackles of government.  It does not mean complete de-regulation, it means a lawful pursuit to obtain that which the individual defines as his or her goal.  It means the removal of boundaries and obstacles that prevent the individual from achieving those goals.

The Liberal wants to define happiness, then provide that generic happiness to the masses.  They want to control the distribution of happiness to ensure we all get an equal share of their brand of happiness, meaning that many will get less than what they might prefer.  They require a sameness of the population so that their brand of happiness will be accepted by the largest number of people, for even they know that you can’t please all of the people, all of the time.  They want homogeny to gain harmony, and thus by definition want to drive diversity out of the population.  In order to deliver on their promise of happiness, we all need to be the same, act the same, and want the same things.  It has never worked, and never will, because people are people.  We are all individuals, and we enjoy the pursuit.

Econ. 101

by ConservativeCowboy 4. June 2009 05:00

I wanted to take a moment to look at the economy this week; with all of the things that are happening in the news recently with the Chapter 11 filing of GM and the Fed chairmen warning about the deficit.  There is also a warning about inflation, and increased worry about how much government intervention is occurring in the financial sector, not just in this country but with the Bank of England in Europe.  With all of that being said I want to take a look at simple economics and why these policies will not work.

First thing to understand is a simple supply and demand graph, and the relationship between the two.  The relationship between supply and demand is what we call an inverse relationship, where the slope of the supply curve is positive and the slope of the demand curve is negative.  Where those two curves meet is the market price for a given product.  Now in the current economic struggles we are seeing a decrease in demand, this causes prices to go down.  At the same time this also changes the amount of materials that need to be supplied, decreasing the quantity supplied.  As you can see with this simple formula jobs are being cut because the amount of material being supplied is less.

Now we can move on to look at what the current administration is doing to fix the problem.  The Obama administration is flooding the market with government spending, giving the money to help shore up the large corporations of the country.  On the demand side he is trying to put more spending money in the pockets of middle class and lower class individuals with tax cuts.  We will call this approach demand side economics, trying to increase demand by giving more money to the consumer.  Not a bad idea on paper however, in practice it doesn’t work for several reasons.  First the government is giving the money to large corporations with no incentive to increase production.  A tax cut for these individuals, however, would provide an incentive to increase production.  The incentive is there because in order to maximize the tax cut companies would want to produce and sell more products.  The second major flaw in this demand side approach to fixing the economy is the simple fact that the tax cuts for the middle and lower class don’t really add anything to their buying power.  A third flaw to this approach is the fact that companies must cut production and therefore cut costs, and that means that there are more unemployed workers in the US and thus those workers are not buying anything outside simple necessities further causing a drop in overall demand.

So how then can we fix this current mess?  The answer is simple and it is supply side economics, or Reaganomics.  By focusing on the supply side of the economic model you get answers to all of the problems discussed above.  Critics of this approach will tell you that the economy during the Reagan administration was not the greatest, however, these policies take time to come into fruition and the booming 90’s can be directly attributed to the polices set in place by Reagan.  By cutting costs of suppliers many good things happen to the economy, first of all you have a company that can produce more products at a lower cost.  Second you have an incentive to make more products, and making more products involves more workers.  With more workers in the workforce demand will naturally go up because more people are secure in their jobs.  You also have companies that are more profitable, I can hear the wheels turning in your head…this will just make the rich richer right?  Wrong, more profitable companies help the entire country for the simple fact that investment in those companies will rise.  That will put faith back in the stock market and the banking system because people are willing to invest.  With an increase in investment there is also an increase in the amount of money that banks are willing to loan.  I am not talking about the toxic loans that got us into this mess I am talking about solid investments that can only help our country grow.

So when we look at the basics of economics it is simple to see that supply side economics will be the best approach to our current crisis.  Mr. Obama, please take a page out of Reagan’s book and push our country forward towards the prosperity that we are capable of in this great nation.  Spending for the sake of spending is not the answer!

It’s Time to Talk Abortion

by Ramarious 20. May 2009 05:00

 Brushfire of Freedom

Ram Rants

Well, we wouldn’t be much of a Conservative site if we didn’t step into the abortion debate now and again.  It’s not a popular subject with Liberals or Conservatives, but it is constantly a topic of discussion in the media and elsewhere.  It usually comes up whenever there is a Supreme Court appointment to be made by a sitting President.  It’s not supposed to be a litmus test, but it often is used as one, at least when the judge is Conservative.

Liberals don’t like to talk about abortion because they are on the wrong side of the issue, at least from the perspective of the general public.  It’s one of the reasons why they call themselves “Pro Choice”.  They’re not supporting “choice”, they are supporting abortion on demand as a method of birth control.  The majority of sex acts in this country are voluntary.  Both people involved have chosen to have sex.  That is a choice, but that is not what liberals are talking about.  They are talking about the consequences of the first choice, to violently end the life of a newly conceived child.  They are talking about killing babies.  Not just in some mythical “pre-life” stage, but any time up to, and if you’re Obama, after their birth.  Yes, Obama supports killing new born babies if those children had the bad taste to survive the abortionists knife.  He’s on record three times voting against bills that would have prevented killing abortion survivors, thus he supports killing babies.  He is the “baby killer” that John Kerry imagined in Vietnam.

Liberals call themselves pro choice because “baby killer” does not sound all that pleasant.  They take the position that the woman should be the master of her body and as such should have the option to kill the baby inside her if she so chooses.  There’s a big problem with this argument.  If you are a woman and you choose to have sex with a man, unprotected, then you have chosen to take the chance of getting pregnant.  Hey, it’s your body, you chose.  But if you do conceive, it’s not just your body, it’s also partly his body, and also the body of an unborn child.  So, the pro abortion crowd believes that a woman should have the right to choose not only for herself, but also for the father and for the child.  This flies in the face of, “...life, liberty...” and all that corny American stuff.  That’s one reason why Conservatives think pro-abortionists are wrong in their arguments.  That, and because pro abortionists frequently kill babies.

Conservatives don’t like to talk about abortion because they feel like they are on the wrong side of the argument, even though most Americans oppose abortion.  They have their friends in the State Run Media to thank for this misconception.  They know that a life, especially one as innocent as an unborn child, should be protected.  They know that the child has no choice, it is still too immature to even understand the concept.  An unborn child is at the mercy of its mother.  The mother made her choice when she had sex with the future dad.  The child is a result of that choice, not a new choice to be made.

Want an analogy?  Next time you get caught speeding, try to convince the cop that you’ve chosen not to take the ticket.  I’m sure he will honor your right to choose.  The speeding ticket is the occasional result of your choice to break the law by exceeding the speed limit, just as a child is the occasional result of the choice of two people to have unprotected sex.  Try aborting the speeding ticket.  Best of luck with that.

So, abortion is morally wrong because it destroys an innocent life.  If you are Conservative, you are now challenged on the death penalty.  After all, you will be told, killing is killing.  How can you stand against abortion and for the death penalty?  The answer is simple.  How many pre-born mass murderers have there been?  The answer is zero.  Abortion destroys an innocent life.  It does not take the life of someone who has been convicted in a court of law of the heinous crime of murder.  Abortion eliminates the possibility of new life, and steals the hope of the future.  It not only impacts the child but the doctor, the mother, and the father.  Those who support it call it pro choice because “pro death” does not make them feel too good.  Abortion was a tool of the Nazi’s, it has been recommended as a method of controlling a human breed, and it stems from the ill-conceived and unproven theory of evolution as the origin of the species.  It is telling that all those who support abortion have survived it.  So why would those that have the right to live deny that same right to an unborn child?  I guess that is their choice.

Reinforcing Mediocrity

by ConservativeCowboy 30. April 2009 05:00

Last week I touched on the failure of our education system to prepare our youth for the trails of the real world.  So let’s take a trip deeper into the education system of our great nation and try to figure out what changes we can make.  One of the biggest issues that I brought up was the lack of competition, and the best example of this is youth sports.  I am a volunteer coach for a YMCA first and second grade soccer team.  I have a great bunch of kids on my team; the problem with this program is that they don’t keep score at any of the games.  Now I know the old saying that winning isn’t everything, however winning is the only way to gauge how successful the team was in executing the skills needed to play soccer.  Winning is and will always remain the overall goal of any sport, and it is what drives the players to learn new skills in order to achieve that goal.  Just as a side note when I get back into the huddle every single one of my kids ask me who won the game and how many goals they scored.  Winning is important to our kids and we are trying to break them of that habit.

Now enter the behaviorist theory in Psychology…yes we are going to bring some science into this little dilemma that is facing our youth.  Regardless of what you think about nature vs. nurture; environmental aspects do have an effect on the way different people handle certain situations.  So when we take winning out of a game we are teaching our youth that trying is the only thing that is needed to succeed.  This thinking may work in youth sports but doesn’t work in the real world.  If I turn in a project that I have been working on to my boss and it is incorrect I don’t get a pat on the back and thanks for trying.  I have to go back to the project and do it correctly.  So by reinforcing the thought process where winning isn’t everything and you can succeed just by trying, we are teaching our youth the wrong lessons.

These lessons are evident in the current generation that is entering the workplace today.  The work ethic of these new workers is one without that drive that pushes us to be great.  This is because all throughout their schooling they were never pushed to win.   That drive is necessary to keep our economic machine running, and without that drive we enter periods of stagnation.  That drive is what pushes the entrepreneurs in this country, pushes our workers to climb the corporate ladder, and pushes us to be more innovative.  This drive is vital to keeping the US competitive in the current global marketplace.

Our education system is broken right now because we have taken competition out of our schools.  We have taken the competition out of youth sports.  We have started to take grades out of our elementary schools.  We have done all of these things to protect our youth from the possibility of failure.  As noble as our intentions are this is not preparing our youth with the necessary tools to be successful.   The same tools that prepare our youth for the real world also keep our economy moving forward.  This is a very simple problem to fix, competition is not something to be afraid of; rather it is something to embrace.  Competition builds character, encourages self-esteem, and creates a lust to outperform competitors.  We cannot continue down our current road and expect for our economy to continue to grow.   Competition is a very simplistic fix to our problems; however, it is a very powerful aspect of our country and needs to be encouraged.  Without competition we will continue down the road to a society filled with stagnation and mediocrity.  If we continue to keep competition out of the schools, we as a country will fail and that is something that every American should want to avoid.
